Happy Tuesday! Today I have author Kara Lockarte joining me on my blog. She’s going to chat with us about her new book, The Boy Who Came Back A Wolf. But first we’ll get to know her a little better. Let’s get started.
Siren: How old were you when you realized you wanted to be a writer?
Kara: I’ve always been a reader, and always thought writing would be too hard. Fast forward to getting fired from my first job out of college in my early 20s and I had my “what-do-I-really-want-to-do-with-my-life moment,” and I realized that was writing. And then I started writing and I realized that AGH it is SO hard. It’s like that shirt meme that’s been floating around facebook recently; it’s like riding a bicycle on fire while zombies are chasing after you.
Siren: I agree, writing is hard work, but very rewarding. Do you find it better to write in the morning or later in the day?
Kara: I’ve always been a night owl. There’s something about writing when it’s dark outside, and people are doing things that normally they wouldn’t do in the glare of daylight that is just very inspiring. Or maybe I just subconsciously think that “if I write it in the dark, no one will read it!” I hate the idea of anyone reading what I write while it’s being written. It’s like visiting a sausage factory. I don’t want to inflict that kind of pain on anyone.
Siren: LOL! What are some of your hobbies other than writing?
Kara: Reading, traveling, eating and cooking. I’m a big fan of the Smitten Kitchen blog. (www.smittenkitchen.com) Of course I say I love cooking, but then how many times have I actually cooked recently…My ambition outstrips the reality of my life. Thus my pantry is overflowing with random things like salted lemon peels (Moroccan), dried anchovies (Japanese), and tahini (Middle Eastern) and yet I can still look in my fridge and be like no food, guess I’ll just have to order out 🙂
Siren: I agree with that. Cooking takes up valuable writing time. What do you love most about being a writer?
Kara: Writing is grown-up daydreaming and inviting others to share in your daydream. I love being sucked into crazy imaginative worlds where dragons create wormholes that allow for interstellar space travel and werewolves and tiger-shifters fight outerspace battles (and have crazy hot sex in between). Yeah, I can be a complete weirdo daydreamer and it’s totally OK!
Siren: Speaking of crazy hot sex, let’s talk about your new book, The Boy Who Came Back A Wolf. How did you come up with your title?
Kara: I definitely don’t have the title genie working for me, but honestly it just struck me out of the blue. The working title was so boring, you would fall asleep reading it: The Return. zzzz (See that was me, falling asleep reading it)
Siren: LOL! Tell us one interesting fact about your heroine and one fact about your hero?
Kara: Lauryn once shaved her head to get a real estate deal done. Xavier, the werewolf soldier used to be afraid of dogs when he was little (yes, irony is delicious isn’t it).
Siren: What’s next for you?
Kara: I just finished the first draft of Captain Skye and the Werewolf Prince: Space Wolf Chronicles 2. Book 2 is about Lauryn’s sister, Skye, a deep space fighter pilot and the prince she’s forced to take on her ship. I’m crossing my fingers it will be out before Thanksgiving! Here’s a working blurb, followed by a brief raw, unedited excerpt. 🙂 (Note that EVERYTHING is subject to change, including the title, but not the series name.)
Blurb:
Captain Skye Daring was one of the top aviators in the known galaxies until a run-in with space pirates led to a crash landing. Though now recovered, her superiors refused to place her back into her Starbolt and instead assigned her to covert ops. Her first assignment? Pick up an allied werewolf prince and his family, and get him out of enemy territory as quickly as she can.
Prince Ral can’t fathom why this woman isn’t more respectful. Soldiers have been left behind and as soon as they get his sister and her baby to safety, he’s going back to get his people. The only thing in his way is a stubborn sexy pilot that he should have no problem convincing he’s in charge.
But when the tiger-shifters track them down, it’s clear that in order to survive, they’ll have to work together. Too bad they can’t stand each other. Or keep their hands off of each other.
Excerpt:
“My brave stubborn Captain,” he said, settling me on his lap. I could feel his erection against my crotch, just a few layers of fabric between us. His fingers trailed down my spine. “You’re outmatched,” he said, another hand slipping inside my shirt, then my bra. I sucked in a breath at the touch of his fingers against my nipple. “Outgunned,” he said gripping my ass. He flipped me on my back, trapping me beneath him. “And clearly overwhelmed. It’s time to surrender.”
My palms went up against his chest, intending to push. Instead I got distracted by that smooth expanse of muscle, the way his hardened nipples felt against the hollows of my palms, contrast of my hand on his white skin.
Fuck, he was right. But I couldn’t let him know that. “How do you know this isn’t a trap?”
He pulled off my shirt, undid my bra and gave me the grin of a predator triumphant. “Because no decent trap should involve caging oneself with a hungry wolf.”

Siren: I absolutely love that excerpt. I can’t wait to read book 2. Okay, time for a little fun. Let’s play, This or That!
This or That.
Which do you prefer….
Coffee or tea?
Kara: What? That’s like offering ice cream or gelato? Both are awesome!
Heels or flip flops?
Kara: Flip flops!
Horror movies or romantic comedies?
Kara: Romantic comedies! I’m so easy to scare: I get scared by commercials for horror movies.
Vampire Diaries or The Originals?
Kara: Umm Game of Thrones? 🙂
Print book or ebook?
Kara: I love the feel of print, but honestly ebooks are so much more convenient.
Reading or shopping?
Kara: Reading!

My review of ‘The Boy Who Came Back A Wolf.’
I give it Five Stars – I loved it.
I’m a big paranormal romance fan, add in science fiction and I’m like a kid in a candy store. This was a short story, but it packed a sexy punch. The characters and the story line was well developed. I loved the chemistry between Lauryn and Xavier.
I have to say that when they saw each other again for the first time in years it was explosive. They were made for each other. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2. This story was well written and the author did a great job of creating a vivid world that I would love to take a trip to. Great job author Kara Lockharte! You’ve got a new fan. 🙂
